Storyline

China on Sunday designated call letters to its latest models of bullet trains just prior to their official commissioning to service. These bullet trains will start traveling between Beijing and Shanghai from Monday onwards.

Two models of "China-standard" EMU bullet trains are named "Fuxing CR400AF" and "Fuxing CR400BF" respectively. The word of Fuxing means rejuvenation; the letters of EMU stand for electric multiple unit; CR stand for China Railway; the numeral of 400 represents the capable travel speed of up to 400 kilometers per hour; the A and B as in AF and BF indicate different train makers and both F's indicate decentralized power unit.

China solely designs and owns intellectual property rights of these models.

These two models obtained their quality certification and manufacturing permission from the National Railway Administration in January.

In July last year, two "China-standard" bullet trains passed by each other on parallel tracks in opposite directions traveling at 420 kilometers per hour in a test run.

The development of the EMU bullet trains involved nearly 300 enterprises specializing in machinery, metallurgy, electronics, chemicals, computer and information management. All components corresponding to key and complementary technologies are produced in China.

China now has the world's largest bullet train fleet and the world's largest high-speed rail network, totaling 22,000 kilometers by the end of 2016.

Of the 2.77 billion railway passenger trips in China last year, more than half were made on EMU bullet trains.
