Storyline

China's two latest models of bullet train debuted on the Beijing-Shanghai line on Monday.

The two models of "China-standard" bullet train or electric multiple unit (EMU) train started operation respectively from the Beijing South Railway Station and the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station Monday morning.

Officially named "Fuxing CR400AF" and "Fuxing CR400BF" on Sunday, they will travel on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail line with the train numbers G123 and G124. They are designed to have a service life of 30 years.

The word of Fuxing means rejuvenation; CR stands for China Railway; the numeral of 400 represents the capable travel speed of over 400 kilometers per hour.

The trains were designed on China's own, with the intellectual property right.

These two models obtained their quality certification and manufacturing permit from the National Railway Corporation in January.

In July last year, two "China-standard" bullet trains passed by each other on parallel tracks in the opposite directions traveling at 420 kilometers per hour in a test run.

The development of the bullet trains involved nearly 300 enterprises specializing in machinery, metallurgy, electronics, chemicals, computer and information management. All components corresponding to key and complementary technologies are produced in China.

China has the world's largest bullet train fleet and the world's largest high-speed rail network of 22,000 kilometers by the end of 2016.

The EMU trains carried half of the 2.77 billion passengers last year.
