Storyline

Mongolians went to the polls Monday to elect a new president for the landlocked country with a population of 3 million.

There are about 2 million eligible voters who will cast their votes in the presidential elections, which mainly involve candidates from three leading parties.

Voting began at 07:00 local time (2300 GMT) nationwide and will end at 22:00 (1400 GMT).

Candidates vying for the top post have offered different measures to ease the government's mounting debt pressure during the presidential campaigns.

Miyegombyn Enkhbold of the ruling Mongolian People's Party and Battulga Khaltmaa of the opposition Democratic Party are considered the main contenders.

To ensure the fair play, 123 international observers from 37 countries will monitor the elections. As for security, the government temporarily prohibits alcohol sales across the country during the elections.

"It is every citizen's responsibility and duty to vote for president of the country. That's why I cast my vote here. The elections this time are organized orderly as last time. The international observers here also guarantee the fairness of the elections," said a voter.

"I think this election is well organized. The facilities are enough and advanced. I believe the elections will go well," said another voter.

The preliminary result will be announced on Tuesday.

If no candidate wins over 50 percent of the ballots, a run-off will be held in two weeks. The Mongolian president is the head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces. The president can serve two consecutive four-year terms at most.
