Storyline

Rescuers evacuated trapped villagers and repaired damaged roads after rain-triggered floods battered several east and southwest China's counties at this weekend.

Floodwater rushed from a swollen river into a village in Yushan County of east China's Jiangxi Province Sunday, making it an isolated islet where 270 villagers were trapped.

Rescuers hurried to the Baiqiao Village only to find all the houses in floodwater as deep as over one meters. The floodwater rushed into the village at 09:00 and villagers had been trapped for over three hours.

"There are 73 households in XiaBaiqiao area. A total of 270 villagers have been trapped for over three and half an hour," said Yu Jiqi, Communist Party of China (CPC) secretary of the Baiqiao Village.

All the villagers were transferred to a local primary school in seven hours and no casualties reported.

In downtown Shangrao County of Jiangxi Province, 1,540 people were affected by recent downpours. A temporary settlement was put up Sunday to receive about 200 evacuees.

Also, in the province's Jing'an County, a man who was swimming in a river was trapped in an island in the middle of the river after the water level rose suddenly Sunday afternoon. Rescuers shot a rope for him and pulled him to the bank in safety.

In southwest China's Yunnan Province, moderate-to-heavy rains pelted Guangnan County where swelling rivers burst banks and flooded riverside houses. No injuries and deaths were reported as villagers were timely evacuated.

Rainstorms hit Cengong County of southwest China's Guizhou Province Saturday morning, triggering a mudslide to trap a van. Rescuers with a bulldozer cleared mud and helped resumed traffic after two hours.
