Storyline

Muslims across northwest China on Monday celebrated their traditional Eid Al-Fitr festival that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting.

In Changji Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, traditional dessert and dried fruit are the most popular among the local residents. Dried dough, sweets, dried fruit and biscuits can be found in every supermarket.

"I want to buy some food for the festival and invite some of my relatives from the Han nationality to our home to celebrate the festival together. I will give the most delicious food to them. We are just like pomegranate seeds that hug tightly together," said Shauketi Torsun, a local resident.

In Urumqi City of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the stationed soldiers visited a local community, celebrated the festival with the elderly, and brought consolation money and daily essentials to the underprivileged families and students.

In Shanshan County, Turpan City of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the staff working at a village visited home of the local seniors of no family, helping them to tidy up the room while accompanying them during the festival.

"I express my sincere gratitude to you for not leaving a widow like me behind. Thank you very much, thanks," said Patikhan Niyaz, a local villager.

While the elderly people are taken good care of, the young couples in Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture celebrated the festival with blessing and joy. A total of thirty couples from Kazakh nationality, Uygur nationality and Han nationality gathered together for a group wedding ceremony during the festival.

"For us (today) is a special day worth commemorating, even in my whole lifetime. If there is no ethnic unity, our happy life also won't exist. I hope we can always live happily," said a bride Huang Hualan.

Family gathering is also a significant part on Eid Al-Fitr festival. In Xining City of Qinghai Province, 73-year-old Ma Keming's home was full of laughter and happiness as his children and granddaughter came back for a family reunion.

"I'm on vacation and I come back home from other parts of the country to celebrate the Eid Al-Fitr festival with my family together. I hope everyone is happy and healthy, "said Ma's granddaughter.

As the economy and the society are continuously developing in Qinghai Province, Ma has witnessed and experienced all the changes.

"Three generations of my family are college students. My son and my granddaughter are all college graduates and they all work on their position. We can see how the Chinese Communist Party and the government care for us minority minorities, especially in the field of economic development for the ethnic minorities," said Ma.
