Storyline

Many Hong Kong residents on Saturday braved chilling rains to witness and feel the warmth with which the Chinese People's Liberation Army forces stand ready to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The PLA Hong Kong Garrison on Saturday offered its 29th open-house to mark the 20th anniversary of the region's return to the motherland and the 20th anniversary of the PLA troops stationed in the special administrative region.

The Open Day started with marching in formation by the guard of honor and hoisting of the Chinese national flag to the accompaniment of the national anthem.

Visitors were then treated to performance of the marching band, routine drills and military hardware like armored vehicles, helicopters, and light weapons.

Saturday's open-house coincided with the port call by China's aircraft carrier Liaoning, guided missile destroyers Yinchuan and Jinan, and guided missile frigate Yantai. Visitors also boarded to see these warships at berth.

"Seeing the motherland equipped with strong military forces, we’re very happy," said one Hong Kong resident.

"It's my first visit to the destroyers. I feel very excited. There were flag-raising ceremony and other performances in the morning. I feel China is stronger and better by the day," said another.

Three barracks of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison offered open-house days for Hong Kong residents from Saturday to Monday next week. The Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks will open for three days. The Shek Kong Barracks will open on Saturday afternoon and the San Wai Barracks will open on Sunday afternoon.

Over the past 20 years, the Garrison has offered 28 Open Days for local residents. Some 680,000 Hong Kong residents have been invited to visit the barracks so far.
