Storyline

Firefighters have been busy dealing with the aftermath of Typhoon Talas, after it crossed over south China's Hainan Province on Sunday.

Typhoon Talas, the fourth one this year, although skipped the coastal waters of southern Sanya City, brought strong winds and rain to the island Sunday morning causing severe damages in some areas.

At 10:00 Sunday, the eye of the storm was above the South China Sea, some 60 kilometers southwest of Sanya City.

The wind speed was up to 23 meters per second, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC) statement.

Firefighters Sunday morning were called to a primary school for cutting a fallen tree that was blocking the road in Hainan's Lingshui Li Autonomous County. The diameter of the tree trunk was as long as that of a basketball's.

Firefighters were successful in cutting off the trunk by using an electric saw just in a matter of half hour, and left the cleaning work to local traffic police.

A huge iron tower, pinned with a lamppost, was blown down at an intersection disrupting traffic for a while.

Firefighters used toothless saws and wrenches to dismantle the lamppost and iron tower, and after an hour things were cleaned up and normal traffic resumed.
