Tensions continue in Jerusalem outside the Al Aqsa Mosque. Muslim worshipers refuse to enter the mosque compound for prayer as long as Israel-operated screening devices remain in place.
At least one Palestinian teenager was shot dead in Jerusalem on Friday as clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces escalated. The violence spread beyond Jerusalem to the Israeli occupied West Bank and Jordan.
Refusing to subject themselves to Israeli security screenings, local Muslims instead held Friday prayers on streets around the mosque.
But Israeli government says for the time, the metal detectors will remain in place.
"The security measures will continue. Our police unites are ready, if necessary to respond to any incidents whatsoever. We have special patrol units, undercover units and border police in and around the different areas," said Micky Rosenfeld, spokesman for the Israeli police.
In advance of Friday prayers, Israel deployed thousands of police and riot police to Jerusalem. Clashes began before prayers and continued until afternoon.
Jordanians showed solidarity, and protested over the Al Aqsa metal detectors by holding their Friday prayers on the streets of Amman instead of in local mosques.
The Islamic religious body responsible for managing Al Aqsa Affairs is calling on worshipers to continue protesting the screening devices by praying on the streets.
The metal detectors were installed by Israel days after two Israeli policemen were shot dead by assailants in the mosque vicinity on July 14.
