Storyline

Thousands of comic fans have been indulging themselves in a world of their favorite cartoon and movie characters as they descended upon the U.S. city of San Diego for Comic-Con 2017.

The annual event, which runs from July 20 to 23, marks its 48th year, making it the country's longest continuously-run comics and popular arts convention.

Comic-Con, which features everything from well-known heroes like the Batman and Spiderman to new popular characters like the Wonder Woman, offers fans a chance to express themselves in ways that might make them feel ostracized elsewhere in their lives.

"I think it's really important to express yourself and know who you are and be able to find a character that you can relate to," said a fan at the convention.

Hero worship is another reason that keeps attracting fans every year to the event.

"We still want heroes though. And Wonder Woman says you can have somebody who's doing the smart thing, you can have somebody who is trying to do the right thing, and being heroic and being healthy at it. And it's sending a very strong message considering the incredible success of that movie," said Travis Langley, a psychology professor at Henderson State University in the U.S. state of Arkansas, who has taught psychology classes on superheroes like Batman and recently released a new psychology book on Wonder Woman.

Along with traditional shows, there are many innovative gadgets on display at the convention, and one of which is a five jet engine-propelled exosuit called Daedalus.

Inventor Richard Browning already has received orders from some wealthy buyers, who are paying around 400,000 to 500,000 U.S. dollars for the unit.

Browning is seeing an even brighter future for his invention.

"Beyond that, we've actually started to identify some really interesting applications. They came to us. Obviously, quite a lot of military collaboration going on behind the scenes, but in terms of short hop evac, getting first responder medics over the rubble of an earthquake into help people. Even we've had some incidents in London where police have had to get to a location. We're not there yet, but I think we've opened the door to a whole load of capability that would be exciting," he said.
