More than 12,000 people in northeast China's Jilin Province have been affected by a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted the Ningjiang District of Songyuan City on Sunday, according to local authorities.

As of 15:00, the quake caused damage of varying degrees to 737 houses in the urban area. Meanwhile, the quake had also affected 4,400 households from 70 villages in the city.

Local authorities are still checking the details and have launched emergency response plans and deployed personnel to the affected areas for inspection and disaster relief.

Surveillance cameras installed across the city recorded the strong tremors when the earthquake hit at 07:13.

The quake struck at a depth of 12 kilometers, with the epicenter at 45.30 degrees north latitude and 124.81 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

Songyuan is about 900 kilometers from Beijing.
