Storyline

China hopes the Chinese-Thai railway project and the Lancang-Mekong cooperation project can truly benefit the Thai people, said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Wang made the remarks while meeting with his counterpart Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai at a press conference in Bangkok on Monday.

Wang said the China-Thailand railway project is a key cooperative project as well as a connectivity project under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Wang said the construction of the China-Thailand railway could drive the development of Thailand's regional industries along the railway line, make breakthroughs in building a pan-Asian railway network, and establish Thailand's status as a regional connectivity hub and an important economic center in ASEAN. He said the project will benefit the long-run development of Thailand as it is in line with the interests of the Thai people.

Wang said although there were unavoidable difficulties in the process, with the promotion of Prime Minister of Thailand Prayut Chan-o-cha, the project has made important headway. He said the two sides specified the road map including the time to start construction and he is looking forward to its completion in time.

Referring to the Lancang-Mekong cooperation, a framework agreed by China, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, Wang said China hopes to work with Thailand and other Mekong River countries to ensure the smooth progress of the project.

Wang said in the next stage, firstly the third foreign ministers' meeting will be held this year, preparing for the second state leaders' meeting. Secondly, establishing six joint work groups on the basis that the six countries have all established their national secretariat and coordination mechanisms. Thirdly, striving for the completion of all the early programs or achieving substantial progress. Fourthly, making a five-year action plan and submitting it to the second state leaders' meeting.

Wang said China hopes to join hands with Thailand and other Mekong River countries to promote the Lancang-Mekong cooperation and make special contribution to building an Asian community of common future.
