Storyline

Tensions are still high in Jerusalem’s Old City after Israel removed metal detectors from outside a holy site in east Jerusalem on Tuesday morning.

Tuesday afternoon, a group of Palestinians were seen protesting outside the Old City's Lions' Gate, nearby a newly added Israeli checkpoint. Israeli police were seen conducting stringent checks of people's credentials before allowing them to get through the Lions' Gate to reach the holy site in the Old City, which to Muslims is known as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Palestinian protesters gathered around the gate expressed their discontent toward the stepped up security measures by staging a sit-in and demonstrating.

"Like when you are at your house, and someone come to you and try to get you out of your house. Are you going to leave it for him? And leave just like that? You're going to stay, right? Even if they throw you out of the house, you're going to stay by the door, right? Outside. Around the house. That's what we are doing," said Maria, a Palestinian protester.

"If we didn't stay now, we will just accept what they are doing for us. So we need to suffer to have what we want, yeah?" said Amina, another Palestinian protester.

Down in the heart of the Old City, streets that used to be bustling have become quiet, and many souvenir shops have closed due to the decline of tourists. Those still open have no customers coming, and the owners seem to have had nothing better to do but play on their cell phones.

Restaurants and grocery stores in the Old City are still open but have suffered a sharp slump in revenue. A grocery store owner named Louis says that he feels desperate as the situation keeps deteriorating.

"We must wait. Nobody know how many times the problem is still here. We need to wait. Nobody know," said Louis.

More Palestinians joined the protest outside the Lions' Gate as dusk fell, occupying a nearby street to prepare for their routine prayer. The situation was almost on the verge of losing control, as the crowds unwillingly let an Israeli police car get through the street.
