A 7.0-magnitude earthquake has wrecked the beauty of Jiuzhaigou national park, a popular tourist attraction in southwest China's Sichuan Province.
The earthquake hit Jiuzhaigou County on Tuesday night, killing at least 20 and injuring 507 as of Thursday afternoon. The Jiuzhaigou national park, also known as Jiuzhai Valley, was one of the worst affected areas.
Jiuzhaigou is famous for its spectacular waterfalls, lakes and karst formations. More than 34,000 people visited the tourist attraction on Tuesday, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Video footage showed that boulders and debris were still sliding down hills in the tourist attraction on Thursday.
The water levels in many lakes in Jiuzhaigou have dropped, and the clear crystal blue waters have turned muddy.
Sparkling Lake, one of the nature reserve's most famous spots, suffered severe damage. It almost dried up after the quake, which was unbelievable in the past as the water level of the lake used to reach nine meters.
Nuorilang Waterfall, the biggest waterfall in the scenic spot, has shrunk after the natural disaster, exposing the used-to-be-invisible rocks behind it.
The quake has also cut off many roads in Jiuzhaigou, making it inaccessible for visitors. Local authorities are working to reopen the blocked roads.
Jiuzhaigou is a popular tourist destination in the mountains on the eastern edge of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is part of the Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Aba and is known for its ethnic minority communities, mountainous landscape, and stunning scenery.
The Jiuzhaigou nature reserve covers 720 square kilometers and includes plateau lakes, waterfalls and mountains. It has been open to tourists since 1984.
