Storyline

Team China finished third overall after Russia and Kazakhstan in the Elbrus Ring discipline of the 2017 International Army Games. The mountainous contest for alpine elites concluded Friday after 13 days of competition.

Of the 14 contests on offer, the Chinese mountain troops won four contests and finished runners-up in as many.

In all, 72 alpine elites from China, Iran, Kazakhstan, Morocco, Uzbekistan and hosts Russia participated in the Elbrus Ring competition.

The contests included rock and glacier climbing and descending, mountain trekking and summit attacking in individual and team contests.

During the competition, the alpine elites had to negotiate eight mountain passes above the altitude of 5,000 meters above sea level en route to trek through 500 kilometers complete with four glaciers and five cliffs. They had to add to their trek shooting from high altitude, helicopter landing and fast high-altitude maneuvers.

It's the second time for the Chinese to have taken part in this demanding competition. They finished runners-up overall last year.
