Egyptians have complained about the badly maintained railway infrastructure and chaotic management of the railway authorities after a deadly train collision that killed at least 43 people and injured more than 120 others on the outskirts of the Egyptian city of Alexandria on Friday.
According to the Egyptian Railways Authority, a train traveling from Cairo, Egypt's capital, rear-ended another train, which was standing by at a small station in the district of Khorshid, east of Alexandria.
At the scene on Saturday, mangled train carriages could be seen on the tracks and several others derailed as workers cleared the site. Traffic has been restored on the tracks next to the crash site.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. But Egyptian media reports said the collision was mostly caused by malfunction in one of the trains and the railway staff’s dereliction of duty.
Many Egyptians blamed the authorities for such accidents.
"It is such a sin that a tragedy like this could happen. Children and young people just died," said a local resident.
"This kind of accident has happened in many other places like kafr ad Dwwar. It is completely the authorities' fault," said another resident.
One local says that Egyptians are not surprised to see such kind of tragedies happening.
"I live close to the railroad and every day, I can see malfunctioned trains on the tracks," he said.
Egypt's railway system has been marred by its safety record due to aged railroads, poorly maintained equipment and inadequate management.
Friday's crash was the latest in a series of deadly accidents that have claimed hundreds of lives over the years. Figures recently released by the state's statistics agency show that 1,234 train accidents took place in 2015 alone.
