The Bolivarian National Guard (BNG) and a small group of young opposition supporters clashed on Saturday in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas with no serious injures reported.
The clash occurred briefly after a rally in Plaza Alfredo Sadel, where demonstrators converged to support Ramon Muchacho and David Smolansky, mayors of the Caracas districts of Chacao and El Hatillo respectively, who were both sentenced to 15 months in prison by Venezuela's Supreme Court. The two districts have been considered bastions of anti-Chavism.
Opponents threw stones at GNB officers, who responded with rubber pellets and fired at least a can of tear gas.
The Supreme Court said the two defendants were sentenced to the jail terms due to their refusal of an order to keep traffic moving in an area regularly blocked by anti-government protesters.
The court also called for their immediate arrest and removal from their posts.
Muchacho and Smolansky did not appear before the court and police are actively searching for them.
In the mobilizations, which were more timid than the previous ones convened by the opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), slogans were chanted against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom opponents called a dictator.
According to official figures, more than 120 people have died in the political unrest since April in the oil-rich country.
