Storyline

Rwandan President Paul Kagame was sworn in for a third term on Friday after winning re-election with nearly 99 percent of the vote.

Kagame, 59, delivered his inaugural speech after taking the oath of office and reviewing the troops at Amahoro National Stadium in the capital, Kigali.

Rwanda's Chief Justice Sam Rugege administered the oath of office, which was witnessed by heads of state and dignitaries from many African countries including Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Senegal, Gabon, South Sudan, Zambia, Niger, the Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Sudan.

In his speech, Kagame described Inauguration Day as a day of renewal and gratitude.

He said Rwanda will continue to build sincere partnerships and strengthen cooperation with other countries.

Kagame, who is also the chairman of the ruling party Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), has been president since 2000 when he was elected as the president of the transitional government by ministers and members of parliament following the resignation of then President Pasteur Bizimungu.

He was re-elected in the 2003 and 2010 presidential elections by winning around 95 percent and 93 percent of the vote, respectively.

Rwanda's constitution was amended in September 2015, following a referendum, enabling Kagame to run for a third term.

About 6.9 million Rwandans cast ballots in the presidential election held on August 4. Kagame won 98.79 percent of the vote.

"He is always able to do great things. He is doing amazing things here in Rwanda as you see. You see how the people here, we are all clear, and we are really happy for him. He will do it," said a Rwandan man at the ceremony.

In his third term, Kagame is mainly tasked with transforming the country into a middle-income country by increasing the country's industrial and agricultural capacities, as well as reducing unemployment and poverty.
