Storyline

Afghan ambassador to the United Nations Mahmoud Saikal welcomed the new Afghanistan and South Asia strategy proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, saying his country is willing to make joint efforts to fight against terrorism.

Saikal, the permanent representative of Afghanistan to the UN, made the remarks during an exclusive interview with China Global Television Network (CGTN) in New York city Tuesday.

President Trump unveiled his new strategy on Afghanistan Monday night in a national address, pledging a shift from a time-based approach to one based on conditions.

He also pressurized the Pakistani government and called it to make more efforts to fight terrorist organizations, and encouraged regional cooperation to boost the peace progress in Afghanistan.

Saikal stressed that terrorism threatens the whole world and Afghanistan needs the global major powers, especially the US to share the anti-terrorism burden.

"Support to Afghanistan will not be time-based or troop-based. It will be condition-based, that they will stay behind Afghanistan until the living condition improves in our country," he said.

Afghanistan is combating with over 20 regional and international terrorism networks and around 70 to 100 Afghan people on average died per day in the anti-terrorism fights, he added.

The implementation of Trump’s new strategy is challenging and requires a large number of coordinated cooperation between the region and the international community.

"Afghanistan sits in between central Asia, South Asia, the Far East and the Middle East. We do have six neighbors. So it's important that we have a healthy dialogue when it comes to the implementation of the US policies I've mentioned," he added.
