Storyline

Afghan President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani called upon Taliban militants to join the country’s peace process on Wednesday.

President Ghani welcomed the U.S President Donald Trump's new strategy on Afghanistan and made the appeal to the Taliban in a televised national address.

He said it is the responsibility of all in Afghanistan to end the nearly-four-decade conflict.

"If you (the Taliban) think you can win the war, overthrow the government by military means, or try to split the nation, I advise you to forget about it now," said President Ghani.

The U.S. new strategy will serve the interests of both the United States and Afghanistan, said the Afghan president. He stressed that a volatile Afghanistan harms regional interests and his government will continue its efforts to fight terrorism.

Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah said earlier on Tuesday that the U.S. new strategy will help enhance the country's security forces. He also suggested the Taliban to regard it as an opportunity to bring peace to the war-torn country and join the peace process.

U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled his new strategy on Afghanistan Monday night in a national address, calling a rapid exit of the U.S. troops from Afghanistan "unacceptable" and pledging a shift from a time-based approach to one based on conditions.

The Afghan Taliban claimed only hours after President Trump's announcement of the new stragety that they will continue their offensives until all the U.S. troops withdraw from Afghanistan.
