Storyline

The battle to liberate the eastern Syrian city of Raqqa from the hands of the Islamic State (IS) was seen at its thickest on Aug 14, as exclusive footage captured on the frontline by a China Central Television (CCTV) reporter reveals.

Under the protection of a Kurdish militia - People's Protection Units, a CCTV reporter gained unprecedented access to the battlefield with a squad of international soldiers.

Just after the reporter's arrival at the largest sentry post in the city at around 10:15, a suicide attack struck only 500 meters away from the post, marking the start of a ferocious day of fighting. Five minutes after the attack, extremists attempted to shoot at soldiers in the post, leaving bullet holes riddled on the walls.

As the battle intensified across the city, commanders at the post were busy checking progress with soldiers on the frontline via walkie-talkies. However, the sound of continuous gunshots and bombings made it hard for commanders to hear clearly from the walkie-talkies.

At noon, the battle was in full swing in the eastern part of the city. The International Coalition launched many airstrikes on the extremists after 13:00, as the Kurdish militiamen started to ramp up their attacks against extremists.

The extremists then penetrated tunnels to an area less than one kilometer away from the sentry post. When attempting to capture footage and report from just outside the sentry position, the CCTV reporter came under fire from snipers.

The militiamen quickly asked the reporter to take shelter inside, with a Kurdish sniper estimating that a nearby enemy sniper had fired three or four shots.

Three soldiers were sent outside to find the sniper. Though they were unable to locate the gunman, no further sniper attacks occurred.

At around 15:00, the Kurdish militia successfully fought back to keep the battle under control.

After returning to a camp site three kilometers away from the frontline, the reporter learned that extremists had launched their fiercest attacks since being besieged by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in June.

The extremists tried to break the siege in the eastern part, but the coalition defeated them, with the SDF reporting that they killed more than 300 extremists on Aug 14.

In 2014, the Islamic State set Raqqa as their capital. In July 2017, the coalition against IS started the fight to retake the city. So far, around 2,000 extremists are still fighting in the city, with tens of thousands of civilians reportedly still trapped.
