Storyline

Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi met with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C. on Tuesday.

Yang stopped over in Washington after his official visit to Jamaica on Sunday and Monday.

The Chinese state councilor pointed out that maintaining the good development momentum of Sino-U.S. relations is in accord with the common interests of both countries and in keeping with the common aspirations of the international community. Important and positive progress has been made recently in China-US bilateral ties under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump. The two sides should implement in real earnest the important consensus reached by the two leaders, respect each other, work for mutual benefit and achieve common progress, focus on cooperation while manage differences to ensure the stable and healthy development of Sino-U.S. relations, said Yang.

Yang noted that President Trump will pay a state visit to China later this year at the invitation of President Xi. China is willing to work together with the United States to push for positive results from the visit. The two sides should further enhance high-level exchanges, build a bilateral dialog mechanism, expand mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields, and broaden people-to-people and regional exchanges.

The two countries should respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, and manage the differences in a constructive manner. The two sides should also strengthen coordination and cooperation on international and regional issues of great significance, Yang added.

Tillerson said the United States is willing to work with China to continue driving forward bilateral relations. President Trump looks forward to his visit to China this year, the U.S. secretary of state noted, during which the two leaders will map out the future course of U.S.-China relations. The U.S. side will make positive efforts to co-host the Social and People-to-People Dialog and the Law Enforcement and Cyber Strategic Dialog to further promote their bilateral relations.

Xi and Trump agreed to establish a comprehensive dialog mechanism during their meeting at Mar-a-Lago in April.

Yang and Tillerson also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern.
