"The mainland and Taiwan resumed people-to-people exchanges in 1987 thanks to the unswerving effort of the people from both sides, breaking the prolonged estrangement. Over the past 30 years, the cross-Strait exchanges have expanded from have-not to have, from a few to more, from indirect to direct, from one way to two-way, shaping up a cross-the-board and multi-leveled exchanges to reach an unprecedented level in exchange in personnel and the contacts in the economic, cultural and social areas, laying a deep-rooted foundation and providing a powerful driving force for the peaceful development between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits."

"Despite the complicated changes in the situation in Taiwan and the cross-Strait relations since May last year, we remain committed to pushing the exchange and cooperation in all areas, deepening the integrated economic and social development between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and maintaining the peaceful development of the cross-Strait relations."

The cross-Strait exchanges over the past 30 years are fruitful and nothing can obstruct the development trend in the cross-Strait exchange, said a spokesman from the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council Wednesday.
An Fengshan, the spokesman said that the mainland and Taiwan resumed people-to-people exchanges in 1987 thanks to the unswerving effort of the people from both sides, breaking the prolonged estrangement.
"Over the past 30 years, the cross-Strait exchanges have expanded from have-not to have, from a few to more, from indirect to direct, from one way to two-way, shaping up a cross-the-board and multi-leveled exchanges to reach an unprecedented level in exchange in personnel and the contacts in the economic, cultural and social areas, laying a deep-rooted foundation and providing a powerful driving force for the peaceful development between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits," said An.
As early as in 1979, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress issued the "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan", appealing for direct navigation, direct contacts and exchange between the people of the two sides.
An said that the achievements in the 30-year exchange are hard-won. The compatriots of the two sides should, therefore, cherish and safeguard the achievements as they are the result of great sacrifice by the countless compatriots of the two sides.
"Despite the complicated changes in the situation in Taiwan and the cross-Strait relations since May last year, we remain committed to pushing the exchange and cooperation in all areas, deepening the integrated economic and social development between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and maintaining the peaceful development of the cross-Strait relations," An said.
All places and departments concerned will hold activities to mark the 30th anniversary of the start of the exchanges between the two sides, he said.
