"One of the basic rules of the international law is safeguarding countries' sovereignty, territorial integrity and peace. So the referendum held by some extremists has negative impact on Iraq. Although the Kurds may find it good, they are still Iraqi people."

The independence referendum of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq could cause big problems not only to Iraq, but also to other countries in the region, said Syrian assistant foreign minister.
Syria's Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister Ayman Sosan made the remark during an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) on Sunday, one day ahead of the scheduled referendum in northern Iraq's Kurdish region.
"Iraq is integral and will maintain its integrity. Any party cannot take the risk [of making the move] because the split of Iraq will cause big problems not only to itself but also to other countries in the region," said Sosan.
He said the move of the Iraqi Kurds violates the international laws, harming both the sovereignty of the country and themselves.

The Kurdistan Region, also known as the autonomous Kurdish region, borders Syria in the west.
The Syrian Kurds have been gaining power since the Syria crisis broke out in 2011 and have now controlled about one fourth of the Syrian territory.
