Storyline

Iraq will not allow the Kurdish referendum to divide the country and will take necessary measures to ensure stability of the country, said an Iraqi political analyst recently in Baghdad.

The Kurdish Regional Government has faced backlash from various parties since it announced the referendum in June.

"I think the referendum will have little value. There are many reasons for me to say that. Shia and Sunni in Iraq are sharing an unprecedented unified stance to maintain the unity of Iraq. The Iraqis will not accept any measures that attempt to split Iraq either. Iraq has received wide international support on the matter. The unity of Iraq conforms to the interests of various parties," said Wathiq al-Hashimi, the political analyst.

Al-Hashimi pointed out that the Kurdish referendum, which aims to seek independence, will not only harm the unity of Iraq, but also threatens safety and stability of the region.

"The referendum has improved relations between Iraq and Turkey. As far as I know, high-level coordination has been carried out between Baghdad and Ankara, and many open and secret meetings have been held. In addition, relations between Iraq and Iran has been very close, now relations between Iran and Turkey has also become closer than before. These three countries felt that their relevant interests are under threat, so they overcame differences and reached consensuses, and may carry out high-level coordination in fields including security, economy and politics targeting the referendum," said al-Hashimi.
