Storyline

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has a very limited choice in forming a new cabinet, as the right-wing populist party Alternative for Germany (AfD) is on the rise.

The AfD gained some one million votes lost by Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in the just concluded voting.

Many Germans have expressed their concerns about AfD's popularity in the voting.

"We all very worry about what impact the new right wing party, which enters the Bundestag for the first time, will have on our way of life," said a German.

"I'm not satisfied because the wrong party has entered the Bundestag," said another German.

Some blamed the CDU for the unstable situation.

"Although the CDU has always been trying to make you feel stable, what we people feel is instability," said a German.

Another difficulty Merkel is facing is whom to choose as her allies. Her former ally, the Social Democratic Party (SPD), said clearly that it will not get involved in the cabinet and it is absolutely impossible for the AfD to get involved in the cabinet. Her choice is very limited.

A CDU member said: "The only other option is to choose the famous Jamaica coalition with the conservatives, the liberals, and the Greens. If, for some reasons, they don't manage to put together a coalition, then there will be just two options, either another big coalition with the social democrats or a new election. And I think, under a situation like this, a new election is good to no one. Radicals will become even stronger. If it comes to the worst, I think they all have to think twice."

The conservative union led by Merkel on Sunday defended its dominant role in the Bundestag, with 32.5 percent of the vote, according to the preliminary exit poll.

The figure fell short of the expectations, 9 percentage points lower than in the 2013 Bundestag election.
