Storyline

China has recently made breakthroughs in its shale gas industry by using independently developed technologies, enabling the world's second economy to join the United States and Canada to become a major shale gas producer.

Compared with conventional natural gas exploration, tapping shale gas is more like collecting blood samples strictly out of blood capillaries. At the beginning, China cooperated with foreign companies to drill a bunch of gas wells using north American technologies; however, no major commercial discoveries were made.

Chinese researchers, after unremitting studies and innovation, grasped the features of shale gas resources located in complicated terrains and creatively forged China's independent technology system in terms of shale gas potential assessment, geophysical prospecting, horizontal drilling, and pressure technology, thus providing technological support for the country's large-scale assessment and development of shale gas.

"Several world leading key technologies used in our shale gas exploration and development are independently tapped by China. This cuts the cost of shale gas exploration of a single well from 100 million to 50 million yuan," said Zhai Gangyi, chief expert of Oil and Gas Survey Center at the China Geological Survey.

The Fuling shale gas field in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, China's first shale gas field for large-scale business development, has already wrapped up its first-stage project which can produce up to five billion cubic meters of gas a year.

At present, its daily output is 16 million cubic meters, equivalent to the total amount of gas consumption of more than 32 million households.

After being integrated into the natural gas pipeline project to transfer gas from Sichuan to east China, the gas field is now sending clean energy to eight provinces and cities along the Yangtze River.

"The output of shale gas in Fuling of Chongqing is estimated to reach 10 billion cubic meters by the end of this year. Now the gas produced in Fuling has already been used for both civilian and industrial purposes, including for taxis and household uses," said Yu Haifeng, director of the Geological Exploration Department of the Ministry of Land and Resources.
