The Chief Executive of China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor called for the Hong Kong people to unite behind the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle and safeguard the country's sovereignty in her maiden policy address on Wednesday.

Lam said in her address that Hong Kong has maintained its characteristics and advantages since its return to the motherland 20 years ago, which goes to to show the "One Country, Two Systems" principle works well in Hong Kong.

"Each of us who loves Hong Kong has the responsibility of ensuring the implementation of 'One Country, Two Systems' is on the right track in Hong Kong, the responsibility of saying 'no' to activities offending the nation's sovereignty, security, and developmental interests," said Lam.

Lam added that the country's Belt and Road Initiative and the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will further bring great opportunities to strengthen Hong Kong's economic development.
