Technologies are bringing a new era to China's manufacturing sector as the country has been upgrading the industry over recent years.
China's huge population of skilled workers and cheap cost of labor once propelled the country to become the world's factory over the past two decades. However, things took a turn when suddenly many Chinese manufacturers found they were lagging behind their global competitors.
In 2015, the Chinese government issued the "Made in China 2025" strategy, encouraging intelligent manufacturing. And later that year, President Xi Jinping brought forward the idea of supply-side structural reform, vowing to upgrade China's manufacturing sector.
Robots and automated machines were quickly introduced to Chinese factories on a massive scale. Some firms even took it a step further by building unmanned factories without workers, relying solely on robots to carve metal plates without human instruction.
"We used to talk about China's economic transformation for many years, but the real change started two years ago in 2015. Our focus has changed from the fictitious economy to the real economy," said Liang Qi, professor with the business school of Sun Yat-sen University.
In a report to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Wednesday, Xi Jinping said that the principal contradiction facing Chinese society is the contradiction between unbalanced and inadequate development and the people's ever-growing needs for a better life.
Liang said the new type of industrialization is a crucial part of the solution.
"So in fact, developing new-type industry is a process of catching up with developed countries. We are also constantly pursuing new heights in the world manufacturing sector. During the process, we can also create fortunes," said Liang.
