They've got TVs, they've got appliances, they have got smartphones, they've computers at small business there too. They really want to leverage all the places that they are. Now they are trying to bring together all this intelligence and then unite them behind Bixby as the means for interfacing all of this."

Storyline

Samsung called for building an intelligent ecosystem that has no limits at its 2017 Developer Conference in San Francisco.

At the event, Koh Dong-Jin, Samsung's President of Mobile Communication, urged the audience of over 5,000 developers to collaborate in order to build his ideal ecosystem.

He later remarked that, "We live in a world with billions of devices. I dream everyone will be united across a common platform."

In the race to make devices smarter, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri have all become stars of the virtual assistant space. Samsung, however, is playing catch up, having introduced its own voice assistant, Bixby, just six months ago.

"None of the voice assistants are great. Alexa's pretty good. I think it's probably arguably one of the better ones. But there's still challenges there. All of them are still limited by a single command response. We don't really have conversations with any of them yet," said Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst of TECHnalysis Research.

Samsung is working to put Bixby into the devices of both its partners and its own vast product line.

"The interesting thing about Samsung is they have a presence in more places in most people's homes than any other company. They've got TVs, they've got appliances, they have got smartphones, they've computers at small business there too. They really want to leverage all the places that they are. Now they are trying to bring together all this intelligence and then unite them behind Bixby as the means for interfacing all of this," said O'Donnell.
