The Wolong National Nature Reserve in southwest China's Sichuan Province spotted 26 snow leopards.
After setting up infrared cameras in an area of 132 square kilometers in June, the nature reserve on Sunday disclosed videos of snow leopards and said altogether 26 snow leopards have been spotted, indicating a high species density given the average density of only one to three snow leopards per 100 square kilometers in China.
"As far as we know, species density of snow leopards in Wolong may be the highest in China. Why the density is so high will be the focus of our scientific research in the next stage," said Li Sheng, a researcher from the Peking University.
Snow leopards are a Class A protected animal in China. They live in the Himalayas in central and south Asia at an altitude of 2,500 to 4,500 meters. They have been spotted in China's provinces of Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan, and autonomous regions of Tibet and Xinjiang.
Experts said the high species density of snow leopards indicates a good environment in the nature reserve.
