Disaster relief efforts initiated spontaneously by Iranians from all walks of life continued in the quake-stricken town Sarpol-e Zahab of western Iranian province of Kermanshah after search and rescue operation by the relevant authorities concluded on Tuesday.
To help those affected by the 7.3-magnitude earthquake, many drove miles to the town to send relief supplies such as food, blankets and tents.
Every day in Sarpol-e Zahab, there were volunteers giving lunch to the quake victims.
Javad, a volunteer from Kermanshah City, said because people here could only have canned food, he drove three hours every day to deliver the lunch donated by his neighbors and to give them some hot meals.
"Some of our neighbors donated rice, meat and beans. Women gathered in the garage to cook meals. Every day we will send the meals here before noon," said Javad.
Apart from volunteers from outside the town, local people were also eager to help each other out of the disaster. Mohammad Ali, owner of a pancake bakery, kept his store open when his facilities survived the quake. However, all his pancakes are no longer for sale, but given away free, and his store has become a venue for storage and distribution of relief supplies.
"All my pancakes have been distributed. We have been giving out pancakes since 05:00. Half of them were baked by us and the rest was sent here by volunteers and we help distribute them," said Mohammad Ali.
Rescue and relief efforts by both the government and the public improved the life of those affected by the quake and the grateful victims appreciated so much the good Samaritan acts of their fellow countrymen.
"All you can think about are brought here and they even brought us so many fruit. I feel so proud of our country and people," said Daniar, a victim.
The earthquake rocked the Iran-Iraq border Sunday evening, killing at least 530 and injuring thousands of others, according to the authorities.
