No casualties have been reported after a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Nyingchi, southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region at 06:34 Saturday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The quake caused power failure and building damage in a number of villages near the epicenter in Nyingchi City.
The epicenter was monitored at 29.75 degrees north latitude and 95.02 degrees east longitude.
The quake struck at a depth of about 10 km. Several minor aftershocks were felt.
The epicenter was in a no man's land in a canyon, according to Nyingchi's Tourism Development Committee. The CENC said areas five kilometers from the epicenter have an average altitude of more than 3,179 meters.
Cracks appeared on some old houses in Nyingchi, and most of the new buildings were not affected.
Villagers living near Mainling County said they heard the sound of rocks falling down in the morning and later found ground fractures.
"You see the ground fracture here on the road, so big a crevice over there. And we heard large sound of rocks falling down this morning," said the residents.
Sources with the regional power grid said the power grids of both Tibet and Nyingchi are operating normally, though it had launched an emergency response mechanism.
According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, emergency response has been arranged with airline companies including China Southwest Airlines, Sichuan Airlines and Tibet Airlines. Nyingchi airport also launched an immediate emergency response while making sure its normal operation and all three scheduled flights were not affected.
