"It was horrible. I was sitting there watching TV when the house started to shake. I couldn't open and door and get out. I was holding on to the door frame, but the rubbles soon buried me. I was trapped for 16 hours, and I lost consciousness. I could hear my husband and people outside, but they couldn't hear me crying. Fortunately, there was oxygen under the rubbles and I was able to breathe. I was pregnant for three months, I did not even know it was morning, I thought it was still night. I couldn't have survived without my husband."

Storyline

An Iranian family almost crumbled by the Iran-Iraq border earthquake got united after a pregnant woman who was trapped under ruins for 16 hours was rescued.

Days after the powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake shook the Iran-Iraq border on Oct. 12, stories of tragedies and miracles have both been heard.

In the quake-stricken town Sarpol-e Zahab of western Iranian province of Kermanshah, a pregnant woman who was trapped for about 16 hours under the rubbles recalled how she was rescued.

Her name is Faranak, which means butterfly.

She had been pregnant for three months when her house was knocked down by the earthquake.

I couldn't have survived without my husband," she said.

Her husband, it so happened, had a hunch at that time and then rushed to find his wife.

"It was about 8:30 in the morning, when I had this hunch. I walked there, shouting her name. I called her twice, and suddenly I heard a soft voice. She was calling me. I started to cry and shout. My wife is still alive! The Red Crescent came. They told me to calm down and asked me where she was. I asked her where she was. She said she was underneath the door of the living room," Rayan, the husband said.

Rescuers from the Red Crescent were touched when they saw Faranak and her husband holding each other tight after being united.

"It took us, the first responders and the military, more than 4 hours to rescue the pregnant woman. When she was rescued, I saw her and her husband holding each other. The family was very happy and we are happy. That was a beautiful moment. Most of the times, we are sad and people are still mourning," said Abbas, a rescuer from the Red Crescent.

Faranak is very grateful that her baby is very healthy.

"When I was rescued, I started to feel pain in my neck, because a brick hit me. They sent me to hospital and did ultrasonic inspection on me. My baby was very healthy, and I was happy. Thank God. Thank my husband, the Red Crescent and the military," she said.

The death toll of the earthquake has climbed to 530, according to local authorities.

The quake, the deadliest in Iran in more than a decade, hit seven big cities and more than 1,900 villages in Kermanshah province. As many as 12,000 houses were completely destroyed and, in addition, 15,000 damaged, according to reports.
