Storyline

Police and protesters staged several clashes on Friday in front of the Rio de Janeiro State Assembly after lawmakers voted to release three other lawmakers who had been jailed in a corruption investigation.

The demonstrations were called by civil organizations and unions with the aim of pressuring the legislators to vote against the release of Paulo Melo, Edson Albertassi and also Jorge Picciani, who is the legislature's president.

The clashes occurred when protesters tried to gain access to the Assembly building after legislators voted 39-19 to revoke prison orders for Picciani and the other two deputies.

The three, all from the ruling Party Brazilian Democratic Movement ( PMDB) led by President Michel Temer, are accused of corruption, criminal association, money laundering and tax evasion, which are, according to investigations, also linked to the monumental corruption plot that related to the ex-governor of Rio Sergio Cabral, who has stayed in prison for one year as of Friday.

Cabral was accused by prosecutors of receiving 65.6 million U.S. dollars in bribes over infrastructure contracts for World Cup and Olympics projects.
