Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Bangladesh counterpart AH Mahmood Ali in Dhaka on Saturday to discuss Myanmar's ongoing refugee crisis.
The talks focused on finding a solution to the crisis and safe return of the forcibly displaced Myanmar refugees. They also discussed humanitarian assistance and international support to Bangladesh. China has urged all parties to maintain an objective attitude and expressed support for what it calls Myanmar's recent efforts to bring stability to the region.
Speaking to the press, the Chinese foreign minister said the turbulence in Myanmar has spread to Bangladesh and brought burden to it, yet Bangladesh has managed to provide humanitarian aid to the Rohingya people who have crossed border into Bangladesh. Till now Bangladesh has been providing shelter and humanitarian support to more than a million forcibly displaced Rohingyas. But the country needs support of the world community.
The international community has lauded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government for the compassion and generosity shown to the Myanmar people seeking refuge in Bangladesh. The Rohingya issue is a complicated one touching on history, ethnicity and religion, among others, thus it calls for a comprehensive solution. According to a press release issued by the Bangladesh, this visit of five different foreign ministers would give a push to Bangladesh's diplomatic efforts, for early and sustainable return of the Rohingyas.
The visit by the foreign ministers reflects the support of the international community for Rohingyas. After the visit, the foreign ministers will travel to Myanmar to attend the 13th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting.
