French President Emmanuel Macron received resigning Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri on Saturday in Paris, two weeks after announcing in Saudi Arabia that he would step down from his post.

Hariri went to the Elysee Palace at 12:10 after arriving in the French capital in the morning from Riyadh.

France is trying to mediate in an attempt to break the impasse caused by the surprise resignation of Hariri that was announced on Nov. 4.

Macron said on Friday that he welcomes Hariri "with the honors of a prime minister", because his resignation "has not been recognized in his country, since he has not yet come back."

The National Lebanese News Agency (NNA) indicated Saturday that Hariri has informed Lebanese President Michel Aoun that he will attend the Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday.

Saturday's meeting came after Macron's invitation to Hariri to visit Paris and end his stay in Saudi Arabia, which unleashed a political crisis in Beirut by his resignation.

Hariri has repeatedly denied that he was in Saudi Arabia against his will and on Friday he highlighted on Twitter that his stay was aimed at "making inquiries about the future situation in Lebanon and its relations with its Arab neighbors."

Speaking to the media in front of the Elysee Palace, Hariri said he is thankful to France and President Macron.

"France has once again demonstrated the greatness of its role in the world and in the region. It is a testimony of its commitment to Lebanon and its stability. For all that, I say again thank you very much, President Macron, and thank you, France," said Hariri.

Hariri added that he will return to Beirut in the next four days and will let people know his position on all the issues after meeting with President Aoun.
