Zimbabwe's ruling party on Sunday held a special meeting of its Central Committee, announcing that Comrade Robert Mugabe was recalled as president and first secretary of the Zanu-PF party.
President Mugabe was recalled earlier on Sunday from his position as party leader in Harare, and he must resign as president by noon Monday or impeachment proceedings will begin.
Also expelled from the ruling party are Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko; First Lady Grace Mugabe; Minister of Local Government, Rural Development and National Housing Saviour Kasukuwere; Minister of Finance and Economic Development Ignatius Chombo; and Minister of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Patrick Zhuwao.
The ruling party, at a special meeting, also nullified the expulsion of Former Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and restored him as a member of the Central Committee.
The party will ratify the appointment of Mnangagwa as president and first secretary of Zanu-PF during a special congress scheduled for next month.
"Comrade ED Mnangagwa be the party's nominee to be appointed to fill the vacancy of state president in terms of part four of paragraph 14, sub paragraph five of the 6th Schedule of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, Amendment Number 20," said Patrick Chinamasa, secretary for legal affairs of the Zanu-PF party.
Deserted by his party, the embattled Zimbabwean leader met military leaders on Sunday for what was hoped to be a conclusive round of talks.
"People were already going to his house yesterday and the military stopped them on the understanding that something is going to happen about his resignation today. We the war veterans called the people two nights ago to come to make this demonstration. We don't want to call them back again," said Chris Mutsvangwa, chairperson of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association.
Details of the meeting are yet to be released.
