Former Chilean President Sebastian Pinera is the current leader in the country's presidential election, with 53.05 percent of the votes being counted, the Electoral Service of Chile (Servel) announced on Sunday.
Pinera garnered 36.66 percent of support, while his main rival, center-left candidate Alejandro Guillier, won 22.63 percent, a report from Servel showed. The final result will be announced at 11:00 Monday.
Some 14 million Chileans voted for a successor to incumbent President Michelle Bachelet. For an outright victory in the first round, the candidate must obtain more than 50 percent of the vote. Otherwise, the top two candidates will move to a runoff election set for December 17.
Sunday's election started at 08:00 at more than 2,000 polling stations across the country. Apart from voting for the next president, Chileans also voted for representatives for the Chamber of Deputies and part of the Senate at the same time.
According to a Chilean survey company, of the eight candidates, Pinera won 45 percent support, leaving his rivals far behind.
"I voted for Pinera. During his last term, the unemployment rate dropped two percent and national economic growth was seven to eight percent. There were more private start-ups than that of any other government. Poverty was largely alleviated and foreign investments increased significantly," said Eugenio Llanos, a voter.
Guillier is candidate from the left-wing New Majority coalition. He has promised to carry on the reforms initiated by Bachelet.
"I voted for Guillier. I considered others but I think Guilier's proposals are better. He proposed a program to let low-income groups have access to high quality education and medical services," said Fernando Diaz, another voter.
