Storyline

Argentina will use all necessary resources to search for the submarine which disappeared with 44 crew members on board, Argentine Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi said on Tuesday.

The submarine, ARA San Juan, lost contact last Wednesday when carrying out a surveillance mission near the southern city of Puerto Madryn in Argentina's exclusive economic zone in the South Atlantic.

"The president told us to use all means available to search for and locate the submarine San Juan," said Balbi.

Balbi said the search-and-rescue mission has entered the critical phase as oxygen supply on the submarine could only last seven days if it doesn't surface. He said the mission, which involves over 4,000 international rescuers on vessels and aircraft, will continue until the submersible appears.

"We are still in the search and rescue phase, which will last until it is reliably located or the submarine is detected," he said.

The ARA San Juan is a TR-1700 submarine manufactured in Germany, and joined the Argentine Navy in 1985.
