Storyline

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha's visit to China aims to promote the high-level exchanges with China, said a Chinese expert in an interview with the China Central Television (CCTV) on Tuesday.

Su Xiaohui, deputy director of the Department for International and Strategic Studies of the China Institute of International Studies, holds that the move implicated the willingness of the South Korean side to promote bilateral relations with China.

"The communication between China and South Korea will focus on several aspects. The first one, most concerned by the public, is the future trend of the China-South Korea relations. On Oct. 31 we saw both sides released a readout at the same time, setting a new position for the future development of China-South Korea relations. So the visit of Kang Kyung-wha this time is a step to restore the bilateral relations and therefore improve the relations. So a main purpose of Kang's visit to China is to enhance high-level exchanges between China and South Korea," said Su.

During the 25 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the relations between China and South Korea is stable in general and was challenged over the past year due to the issue of THAAD, she said.

And now South Korea is adjusting its policies to meet China halfway, which is a positive signal, the expert added.

"South Korea released a clear signal in October that it expected meetings between leaders of China and South Korea, high-level exchanges, could be realized. It hopes Moon Jae-in can visit China to further promote the development of China-South Korea relations. Under this background, China also released a positive sign that it is willing to live in amity with its neighboring countries," she said.

It is mutually beneficial for both sides, as neighboring countries, to maintain positive communication on all aspects, including politics, economy and security, to improve the bilateral relations, Su suggested.

"So far the China-South Korea relations is on a track of positive interaction. From the perspective of South Korea, it is hoping to push forward the bilateral relations to a better future and properly manage differences, to make the China-South Korea relations more in line with the interests of both sides. We can see that the fundamental cause behind the current interaction between China and South Korea is that both China and South Korea consider the positive development beneficial to their interests," said Su.
