Nearly 100 media organizations from 45 countries gathered at a global video media forum in south China to find a solution to the challenges and opportunities the media world is currently facing.
With social media platforms becoming a mainstream news source, traditional broadcasters and news organizations are facing unprecedented challenges. To keep up with this fast-changing world, the China Global Television Network (CGTN) Global Media Summit and the Global Video Media Forum 2017 opened on Tuesday in Sanya, south China's Hainan Province.
The summit was co-hosted by China's flagship global media organization, CGTN and its content provider China Central Television News Content (CCTV Plus).
CGTN controller Jiang Heping says the challenges that global media may face in the future are one of common concerns being tackled together.
"We must explore the ways and solutions to those challenges and problems ahead of us. That's why we sit together, talk together and find solutions," he said.
In his opening speech, Jiang focused on media integration.
"Content, technology and accessibility, in the media today, only integration can be king," said Jiang.
In October, CGTN launched its news center -- one that attempted to break the barriers of TV and social media -- hoping to provide a solution to the world.
"CGTN is a brand new media organization. We don't have any original burdens. We are from zero. We could embrace all the new technologies and all the new solutions to the new media as well as to the traditional media. [We have] the CGTN TV channels combined with new technologies and new trends of social media," said Jiang.
In a panel discussion, experts from five TV broadcasters, CGTN, Cable News Network (CNN), Russia Today (RT), Al Jazeera and ARD, shared their thoughts and experiences on media convergence.
Many worry this trend might dilute the essence of news, but industry insiders say media convergence doesn't mean the loss of true news values.
"All we know is that media is changing, technology is changing and we have to catch up with those changes," said David Schlesinger, founder and managing director of Tripod Advisors.
In a time when fake news on social media can influence a country's elections and politics, sticking to professional journalism is especially important for traditional media outlets.
"What we publish is accurate, honest, truthful, and useful to the reader or the viewer. It's really important that those core values are held to. That won't win the battle on its own, but if we don't do that, we don't stand a chance of succeeding," said John Pullman, global head of video and pictures at Reuters.
The summit will continue for another day, inviting tech and media leaders across the world to discuss the future integration of media and technology.
