The Syrian government has strongly condemned the United States expected decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the U.S. embassy to the city, in a statement released by the Syrian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
The statement deems the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to be in contempt of international law, and said the U.S. is ignoring its responsibilities to help maintain international order.
Fayssal Mikdad, Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister of Syria, said the decision will constitute a precedent in international relations which may have dangerous consequences.
"Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian people of the Palestinian state. This will have very dangerous repercussions on the overall situation of the Middle East," said Mikdad.
The move will not only have a major influence on the Middle East region, but will also affect the entire world, Mikdad added.
