Storyline

Chinese peacekeepers on United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Mali, together with their Cambodian peers, safely disposed of an unexploded mortar shell found close to the Chinese peackeepers' camp on Tuesday.

The mortar shell was found by some local villagers who were building a road somewhere about 300 meters away from the camp's southern gate. Upon receiving the report, the Fifth Chinese Peacekeeping Detachment to Mali dispatched 12 peacekeepers to the site.

The Chinese peacekeepers cordoned off the area for safety concern, informing a UN bomb disposal company comprised of Cambodian peacekeepers to dispose of the shell, which was believed to be left from the Mali conflict in 2012.

"It's about 4:00 p.m., during the off hours of a primary school and villagers. Busy traffic added difficulty to our on site vigilance. We have reported the situation to the MINUSMA Eastern Theater Command, and now waiting for the Cambodian EOD team to dispose of the bomb," said Chang Wentan, a squadron commander of the Chinese peacekeeping force in Mali.

The Cambodian peacekeepers deactivated and detonated the shell after 15 minutes of disposal.

The disposal of the bomb was merely one of the deeds Chinese peacekeepers have done to make the life of the local people safe and sound.

"Chinese people have done a lot for us and given the Malian people a lot of things. For example, they've given the local schools many things and also brought to the villages many medicines," said Chris, a local employee with the MINUSMA.
