"China understands the concern held by the Islamic countries over the status of Jerusalem. We support the settlement of this issue in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and international consensus. We also support the establishment of an independent State of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty, with East Jerusalem as its capital and based on the 1967 border. China hopes that the negotiation between Palestine and Israel could be resumed at an early date so as to reach a comprehensive, fair and enduring solution to the Palestinian issue."

China supports the establishment of a Palestinian state with full sovereignty and independence on the basis of the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, said a spokesman of China's Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

Lu Kang, the spokesman, made the statement at a press briefing after Muslim leaders called on the international community to recognize East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.

"China understands the concern held by the Islamic countries over the status of Jerusalem. We support the settlement of this issue in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and international consensus. We also support the establishment of an independent State of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty, with East Jerusalem as its capital and based on the 1967 border," Lu said.

The spokesman added that China hopes that the negotiation between Palestine and Israel could be resumed at an early date so as to reach a comprehensive, fair and enduring solution to the Palestinian issue.

Trump on Dec. 6 recognized Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel and said the U.S. embassy would be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which has sparked off demonstrations in many countries.
