"Although those Taiwan-related clauses of this act are not legally binding, they severely violate the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US joint communiques and constitute an interference in China's internal affairs. "I have to reiterate that the one-China principle is the political foundation for Sino-U.S. relations. The Chinese side firmly opposes any form of official or military exchange between the United States and Taiwan, and opposes the sales of U.S. arms to Taiwan. We urge the U.S. side to fully realize that the clauses are severely hazardous, and properly handle the issues regarding Taiwan in accordance with the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, so as to avoid impairing the Sino-U.S. cooperation in a larger picture and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

Storyline

The Chinese mainland resolutely opposes any official or military exchange between the United States and Taiwan, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Thursday.

Lu Kang, the spokesman, made the remark at a routine news briefing to comment on that US President Donald Trump signed into law the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018, which considers the possibility of port visit to Taiwan by US military ships among other non-legally binding provisions.

"Although those Taiwan-related clauses of this act are not legally binding, they severely violate the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-US joint communiques and constitute an interference in China's internal affairs. China always firmly opposes this and has lodged stern representations with the US government," Lu said.

The spokesman reiterated that the one-China principle is the political foundation for Sino-US relations.

"The Chinese side firmly opposes any form of official or military exchange between the United States and Taiwan, and opposes the sales of U.S. arms to Taiwan," Lu said.

"We urge the U.S. side to fully realize that the clauses are severely hazardous, and properly handle the issues regarding Taiwan in accordance with the one-China principle and the three China-US joint communiques, so as to avoid impairing the Sino-U.S. cooperation in a larger picture and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," he added.
