Foreign Ministers of the six countries along the Lancang-Mekong River gathered in Dali City of southwest China's Yunnan Province on Friday for their third meeting on sub-regional cooperation.
Co-chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhon, the third Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Foreign Ministers' Meeting was also attended by their counterparts from Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
Participants at the meeting hailed the rapid development of LMC.
"Throughout the meeting, our six countries can summarize cooperative experience, consolidate cooperative outcomes, accelerate cooperative process, as well as reach more consensuses on the future development of the mechanism. We also need to make necessary preparation for the second Lancang-Mekong Leaders' Meeting to be held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia next January," said Wang.
The six countries have identified three areas for cooperation, including political and security issues, economic and sustainable economic development. They also prioritized five key areas, namely, connectivity, production capacity, cross-border economic cooperation, water resources, agriculture and poverty reduction.
"By strengthening our collective capacity to form production and service's alliances, we can benefit from this new mega free trade regime. We need to accelerate and expedite the financing of major project to build a comprehensive connectivity network of highway, railway, waterway, ports, and air routes in the Langcang-Mekong Region," said Sokhon.
Later, Wang briefed the media along with his Cambodian counterpart on the meeting' achievements. He highlighted a Five Year Action Plan starting from 2018 designed to guide LMC.
"We have made fruitful achievements at the just-concluded meeting. The meeting approved a Joint Press Communique, and announced a list of the cooperative projects supported by the LMC special fund in 2017. We agreed to establish a LMC hotline information platform. We also agreed to make concerted efforts and strengthen cooperation, helping the LMC evolve from its nurturing period into the growing period," said Wang.
As part of the event, the foreign ministers launched the official website of the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation China Secretariat. They also visited a photo exhibition showcasing major achievements of the group.
Since its official launch in March, 2016, the LMC mechanism has resulted in a number of outcomes, including political mutual trust, trade and investment cooperation, as well as people-to-people exchanges. As the first sub-regional cooperation mechanism of its kind, it also works to promote South-South cooperation, and contributes to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
