Storyline


A story about a baby elephant and its fathers has been running viral on the Internet.

The baby elephant has the charming name "Yang Niu". It looks healthy and lovely. But there is a moving story behind all this.

It turned out that "Yang Niu" was an abandoned baby elephant. It was taken home by a worker from the Asian Elephant Stock Breeding and Rescue Center in Xishuangbana, southwest China's Yunnan Province.Under the meticulous care at the Center, the two-year-old Asian elephant, Yang Niu is now weighing 480 kilograms and looks healthy and happy now.

It was August 17, 2015. After Yang Niu was born, it suffered from umbilical cord infection, with the symptoms of heart failure. Its mother abandoned it and fortunately, a worker of the center discovered it and took it home.

The worker was Chen Jiming. He said that when he took the baby elephant home, it weighed only 76 kilos. It looks pale as it had no mother milk to drink. It was even in a coma on the way home.

The worker gave it goat milk to drink. It began to grow. As it was the Year of the Goat, she was given the name Yang Niu (goat girl in Chinese).

Given her weak conditions, four keepers took turns to take care of Yang Niu 24/7. They all slept in one room with her. "Two elephant dads could rest while the other two kept awake in case of any emergency happening to Yangniu," said Chen. They also built a small bridge for it to do exercises.

Two years passed. The baby elephant has had nine friends and 18 “elephant dads”now. Getting healthier and healthier, she drinks more than 30 kilograms of goat milk a day. The keepers trained her for about six hours a day in the mounta6in. They have been taking her to mix with other elephants,too.
