Chinese express firms delivered 280 million parcels per day on average in the fourth quarter of 2017, according to official data released by the national postal service regulator Friday in Beijing.
The China Express Development Index Q4 was also issued by the State Post Bureau at the quarterly press briefing.
Geng Yan, director of the Market Supervision Research Section of the Development Research Center under the bureau, told reporters that China's express firms dispatched 280 million parcels on daily average from October to December in 2017, which means at least one out of every five people in the country used the postal service every day in the period.
She said that couriers delivered 12.66 billion parcels in the last three months last year, up 24.3 percent year-on-year, accounting for 31.6 percent of the year's total. Nearly 140 million parcels were dealt with daily.
The director added that parcels triggered by online shopping contributed to nearly 70 percent of the total in the fourth quarter, up by nearly 10 percentage points compared with the third quarter, thanks to November's "Single's Day" shopping bonanza.
The postal infrastructure also expanded steadily, according to Geng.
"In the fourth quarter [of last year], for every 10,000 people, there were 1.6 express branches, and 2.4 branches within every 100 square kilometers. The branches continued to grow in density," said the official, adding that the revenue also went up in this sector.
"The postal business in the fourth quarter accounted for 6.6 per mille of the gross domestic product (GDP), a year-on-year growth of 0.6 permillage points," she added.
