Storyline

A deadly mudslide has left the city of Montecito, a wealthy enclave of about 9,000 people in Santa Barbara County, California without power and internet, filled with debris and destruction while rescuers are still searching for survivors.

A strong winter storm hammered the region on Monday, bringing along heavy downpours.

As the heavy rains lashed into the charred hillsides of the Santa Barbara County, sending rivers of mud and massive boulders crashing into the residential neighborhoods on Tuesday, deadly mudflows ran across the region leaving 17 dead and several others missing.

Hundreds of firefighters and rescuers are still arduously looking for missing people and survivors. However, the heavy mud and wreckages that was left behind by the slide has complicated the search.

Uprooted trees and shrubs can be seen lying along the roadsides piled up in a pool of mud, leaving the whole region with a stinky odor as the sun basked.

A few weeks earlier, the area was hit by wildfires, including Thomas Fire, the largest wildfire on record in the state.

The raging fires is believed to have not only burn things above ground but had also altered the physical aspect of the ground itself.

The Montecito economy, heavily reliant on tourism and avocado production has also been affected by the mudslide.

Local government has been sparing no efforts in trying to resume power and Internet to the region.
