Storyline

Multiple active measures have been taken across China as the county is facing a severe influenza outbreak which has been spreading more aggressively than in previous years.

Hospitals are overcrowded with both children and adults as people are anxiously waiting to get treatments and medicines.

Pediatric departments in both hospitals in Zhengzhou city, central China's Henan Province, and Taiyuan city in north China's Shanxi Province, have been witnessing an increasing number of child patients as the group's immature immune system is influenza vulnerable.

The People's Hospital of Zhengzhou has been receiving large number of patients since last month, with its daily number standing at 150 to 200.

Taiyuan hospitals are facing the same situation. "All the pediatricians that are available and qualified to see patients have all been dispatched to the outpatient service. Doctors are on their duties in turns so as to relieve the pressure from both outpatient and emergency departments," said Zheng Yanmei, deputy head of Maternal and Child Care Service Center in Taiyuan city.

Moreover, Taiyuan's Population and Family Planning Commission also established an expert group that consists of doctors from respiration and pediatric departments of local hospitals to offer medical consultants.

"We have fairly outstanding experts from many hospitals in the expert group to offer service to all hospitals in the city. Our group will pay a visit to a hospital to do a consultation as long as there is a critical case," said Zhang Ze, deputy director of Taiyuan's Population and Family Planning Commission.

Beijing's Food and Drug Administration also sent emergent notice to five major medicine suppliers of the city, ordering them to dispatch more oseltamivir, an antiviral medicine, to all medical institutions in an effort to combat the influenza.

"We ordered major medicine suppliers in the city to send 40,000 boxes of oseltamivir to the medical institutions on Monday and Tuesday. Currently we still have 15,000 boxes in stock and we will continue to ask them to purchase more to cope with the drug demands of those medical institutions," said Zhang Song, deputy director of medicine, medical equipment market supervision department at Beijing's Food and Drug Administration.

The Chinese National Influenza Center said the flu has been on the rise in recent weeks, and was very prevalent during the last week of 2017 with 11,253 cases reported, up from 7,730 the previous week.
